WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is a short-term exposure of the entire body to freezing temperatures between -170F and -270F for 2-3 minutes. When the body is exposed to this extreme cold, vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) of the peripheral tissues takes place and sends blood from the skin’s surface and muscles to the main organs to protect the body’s core temperature. The blood flow continues to circulate between the cardiovascular system and vital organs. During this time the body stimulates receptors to activate the nervous, endocrine and immune system. Once the participant exits the chamber, the body immediately begins vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) where the blood returns to the peripheral tissues, improving blood flow and supply while flushing out toxins. The results being reduced inflammation, pain, improved mood, physical body and overall health and well being

WHAT TO EXPECT

The cryosauna looks like a stand-up tanning booth. You undress, put on a towel/robe, gloves, and socks before stepping inside. The cryo-operator will have you close the door and remove the robe. A liquid nitrogen tank attached to the machine pumps the cold air in. Treatments last for 1.5 to 3 minutes.

HOW IT WORKS

When we subject our bodies to ice cold temperatures, our bodies go into a fight-or-flight response that is meant to keep us from freezing. As the cryosauna exposes the skin to super-cold temperatures, our bodies go into “I am freezing, must survive” mode and the blood rushes to our core to keep our organs functioning. There, it is enriched with oxygen and nutrients as our body works in super-survival mode. As soon as we step out into the warm air, the oxygenated blood rushes back out, flooding the peripheral tissues and flushing out toxins.

WHY IT'S BETTER THAN AN ICE BATH

Ice baths can be painful, and even after (30 minutes submerged skin temperature doesn’t go below approximately 41 degrees). By that time, the muscles are literally frozen and pretty immobile. For athletes, this means downtime they can’t afford. With cryosauna treatments, the skin is exposed to (a) dry cold of – 240 to -270 degrees Fahrenheit. As soon as you step out of the cryosauna, blood rushes back out from your core and you feel a rush of endorphins and energy – making for a quick and high-octane return to physical activity. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect helps with joint disorders and muscle soreness. Overall, immunity is boosted. Whole Body Cryotherapy boosts endorphins and increases metabolism, pushing the body to burn calories in the few hours after the procedure (and more over time with regular sessions).

HOW THIS HELPS SKIN, BODY, AND WELL BEING

The skin is made up of many layers, the dermal layer is supported by an a collagen matrix that gives skin its strength and resilience. Over time, the production of collagen slows down and the collagen matrix in the skin is not as ‘tight’ as it used to be, leaving the skin more vulnerable to damage from the elements (sun, stress) as well as fatty deposit build-up in the dermal layers causing cellulite. Whole-body cryotherapy is the most effective treatment for improving skin’s overall appearance and reducing the noticeability of cellulite, fine lines, and wrinkles.

The temperature of the skin drops -30 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit (the temperature of the ‘environment’ in the chamber reaches -200 to -270 degrees). This drastic change causes the nerves in the deeper levels of the skin to send signals to the brain in response to the perceived “freezing”. Even though there is no risk to the body (gloves and socks are worn to protect the hands and feet), the body responds in such a way to protect and preserve itself. Blood vessels in the skin constrict as blood is directed to the core to protect the vital organs. Toxins are drawn out of the blood as it circulates in the core, becoming nutrient-dense and oxygen-rich.

Once out of the chamber, vasodilation occurs and blood rushes back into circulation throughout the body. Even though there is no damage to the skin exposed to the cold air temperatures, the body still attempts to “repair” the outer layer of skin by stimulating collagen production, resulting in better skin with a firmer appearance and improving skin tone.

The immune system increases the white blood cell count causing reduced inflammation and a positive, powerful immune system response. Circulation is improved and water weight is reduced as the circulatory system reacts. The endocrine system jumps into action with an endorphin and noradrenaline release and an increase of “feel good” hormones in the blood stream.

And all of this healing can start to happen in three minutes, sometimes less. According to a pain study regarding patients with rheumatoid disease, cold therapy reduced pain significantly. When cryotherapy becomes regular practice, inflammation and chronic pain is reduced and joints work better.

BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY

SPORTS AND FITNESS

Athletes for centuries have used applications of cold (water, ice) to reduce inflammation and swelling, minimize pain and strengthen the immune system. Many professional athletes have been using ice baths throughout their careers to help the body recover after exhausting workouts and competitions. WBC is the evolution of cold therapy which is much more effective, efficient, beneficial and comfortable than whole body immersion into an ice bath. It utilizes cold dry air for a short period of time to trigger the most powerful self-protective and generative mechanisms of the human body.
Cryotherapy boosts energy levels and performance, helps athletes train harder and recover faster. WBC treatments will give competitive athletes an edge by enhancing preparation and reducing recovery time so they can train harder and maximize performance.
